This year, Mental Health Awareness Week is highlighting one of the primary causes of poor mental health: stress.
Stress can arise from various sources and manifest in numerous forms. It is also significantly associated with causing anxiety and depression. So, what steps can we take to manage or control stress on a daily basis?
We've reached out here at SkateHut HQ and compiled some ways that we or people we know handle stress.
Spend time outdoors –
Sometimes, nothing compares to taking in some fresh air and going for a walk in nature. This might not always be feasible depending on your location, but stepping outside for just 10/20 minutes when you're feeling stressed could greatly benefit you. Even better, plan a few hours outdoors by organizing a hike or adventure in the stunning countryside.
Socialize with friends –
What better way to distract yourself than by sharing a laugh with friends? Gather together and engage in something enjoyable like visiting the local skate park, bowling, or catching a movie at the cinema to see one of the many blockbuster films released this year!
Get Active –
Whether your preferred sport involves a gym, a field, or concrete, this can combine several of our stress-relief methods! If you've been considering starting a new sport, do some research and give it a try; you might discover some hidden talent. Or, if you're already involved in a particular activity, make time to do it more frequently and set goals to achieve.
Start a hobby –
Hobbies can cover a wide range of interests! Painting, writing, building, music, knitting...there's an endless list of hobbies for everyone. Engage in something that helps you unwind.
Maintain a healthy diet –
We all enjoy indulging in sweet treats, burgers, and pizzas occasionally, but if you're feeling sluggish and low, it could be linked to your diet. We're not suggesting a drastic change, but perhaps incorporate more nutritious options where possible. Providing your body with the necessary nutrients can help you sleep better and generally feel better.
Talk to someone –
Often, this is easier said than done, but it's also one of the most effective actions if you're dealing with any form of depression, anxiety, or stress. Opening up can provide a sense of relief and help someone close to you understand your thoughts and experiences. There are many people available, whether friends and family or through a dedicated helpline, you are not alone. It can be one of the most challenging things for many people, but having someone listen can be the best solution.
We hope these coping strategies may be helpful to some of you. If you're seeking more information about Mental Health Awareness Week, visit the Mental Health Foundation's website. .
