Catching Up with Skate Friends

Roller skating has witnessed a significant rise in popularity in recent years, marking a true comeback for the activity. There's something about the smooth motion on eight wheels that triggers those feel-good chemicals in the brain. As a result, thousands have turned to roller skating to support their mental health and wellbeing. At SkateHut, we've observed some incredible groups and communities come together, advocating skating as a means to connect with others and stay active, with the ultimate aim of brightening the world a bit.

One of those groups is Skate Buddies, established by Empress Gibbs and her team after the pandemic, located at the MAC in Canon Hill Park, Birmingham. We had the opportunity to welcome Empress to SkateHut HQ to learn more about her mission and what lies ahead for Skate Buddies. We discuss the significance of mental health, the origins of Skate Buddies, how people can get involved, and you can watch this video below…

“I used to visit Canon Hill Park, and that's where I encountered Skate Brum and began skating. From the moment I woke up until I went to bed, I was on my skates. It was then that I discovered the true freedom and understanding of how skating can benefit mental health, wellbeing, and fitness during that time.”, Empress tells us.

You can learn more about Skate Buddies on their website and also support them in raising funds for equipment and events with their GoFundMe page. So if you're considering trying out skating, wanting to meet new friends, or staying active and fit, all while enhancing your mental wellbeing, everyone is welcome to join. They also have groups across the country including Cardiff, London, Nottingham, and Leicester, so if you're in these areas, reach out!

We love the lively and welcoming communities we encounter and feel fortunate to collaborate with these amazing individuals. For some, starting something new can be a big step, but that's why Skate Buddies exist to assist. They aim to create a safe and enjoyable environment for both beginners and experienced skaters. We eagerly anticipate the continued expansion of Skate Buddies and all the wonderful work Empress and her team accomplish.
