Skateboard GB Announces Andy Macdonald as Special Guest at Habito National Skateboard Championships 2022

Last week, Skateboard GB revealed who their special guest at this year's National Skateboard Championships would be. When the video was released on Skateboard GB’s Instagram, everyone tuned in to discover it was none other than the legendary skater Andy Macdonald! This is a significant announcement and an exciting opportunity for all attending or watching the championships live on BBC Sports via the red button. For those who may not yet be familiar with Andy’s impact and have recently taken up skating or are new to the skate culture, we are revisiting some of Andy Macdonald’s most remarkable accomplishments.

Andy Macdonald is a professional skateboarder from Melrose, Massachusetts, USA. He has been competing in the X Games since they began in 1995, earning more medals than any other skater, with a total of 23, including 8 golds. Notably, during his competition runs, Andy is known for his exceptional work ethic, frequently practising his tricks meticulously to maintain their consistency. Some peers have even remarked that this might have initially held him back in his skateboarding career, as his tricks appeared so perfect it seemed like he wasn't making an effort.

In 1999, Andy Macdonald attributed discovering skateboarding at the age of 12 as a crucial reason for avoiding drugs and alcohol, and he participated in a public service announcement for the “Partnership for a Drug-Free America” (now known as Partnership to End Addiction).
This led to Macdonald being invited to the White House to meet with then-President Bill Clinton. Macdonald even rode his skateboard through the White House, which did not please the Secret Service. Throughout his lengthy career, Andy Macdonald has had many sponsors, and he was open to sponsorships that weren't traditional for skateboarding, including amazon.com and LEGO, to name a couple. Andy was not afraid to think outside the box and was willing to endorse these brands as long as they supported and contributed to more skate events, helping smaller events grow and become more established.

Many agree that Andy Macdonald’s career was far from easy, as he remained committed to skating vert ramps at a time when vert competitions were quickly falling out of favor, with the focus shifting to street skating. Nevertheless, Andy was unwavering in his commitment to skateboarding as a profession. In 1999, he was voted “Best Overall Skater” in a Transworld Skateboarding reader’s poll. With many achievements in his past and a vast array of skate trick knowledge, we eagerly anticipate watching Andy skate at the Skateboard GB x Habito National Championships. We can't wait to see the kind of performances that have earned him multiple X Games gold medals!
